SUPERIOR, WI - 2022 is certainly a historic year for the Superior High School Softball team. The Spartans earned its first Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional championship since 1993 and its first state tournament win since 1978. The softball team was recently awarded another accolade.

On Sept. 16, Todd Clark, WIAA Director of Communications, presented the Spartans with the 2022 WIAA State Tournament Sportsmanship Award. This marks the first time a Superior girls team achieved this honor. The Superior boys hockey team, most recently in 2015, is the only other squad to receive this recognition.

"It's truly an honor to be a part of the first female team at the school to earn this award, and it's a good way to represent our school." said senior infielder Ava Stratton.

"It's emotional because we talk about sportsmanship all the time," said Superior head coach Mike Sather. "It represents character, and that's something that we preach. I guess the message is getting through."

The WIAA made its selection from the evaluations made by game officials, tournament management, crowd control, ushers, and other WIAA staff members.

Raye Named 2022 WFSPCA Player of the Year

Catcher Emma Raye also took home some hardware that night. She was named the Division 1 Player of the Year by the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association. According to season statistics compiled at wissports.com, Raye, who wrapped up her junior year in June, hit .500 (40-for-80) at the plate for the season in 22 games. She finished with six home runs, three triples, and five doubles. She led the team in RBIs (19) and stolen bases (14).

"Usually, this award goes to top-tier pitchers in the state, and being a catcher, it's amazing! It just makes me realize that all my hard work has paid off. But I can't stop here. I have to keep getting better." said Raye.

The Spartans finished the 2022 season with a 19-3 record. Superior is expected to return all but three players from that state tournament semifinal squad. The new season will begin in late March 2023.
