VICTOR AND MARY D.
NELSON SCHOLARSHIPS Amount Varies
Renewable up to 4
years
History: The Victor & Mary D. Nelson Scholarship Trust Fund was
established in 1973 by Mary D. Nelson of Superior, Wisconsin. The purpose of
the trust is to provide scholarship funds to graduates of Superior High School
based upon character, leadership, scholarship, citizenship and need as
determined by the Scholarship Committee of Superior High School. Prior to 1983,
Nelson Scholarships were of a sustaining nature within the limits of the funds
available to students seeking their postsecondary education at a 4-year
college/university. Since 1983, scholarship support has expanded to include
students planning to attend vocational/technical schools.
Selection Process
and Criteria: For a student to qualify as a candidate for the Nelson Scholarship,
they must have taken a minimum of 3 Advanced Placement and/or Project Lead the
Way Courses while maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.50. Project
Lead the Way must meet college credit criteria. Each Nelson Scholarship
candidate is required to submit a completed application form to the Scholarship
Committee, to participate in a writing sample session, and to provide an
addendum to the application. In addition, candidates advancing to the final
round are required to interview with members of the Scholarship Committee.
Each candidate is
evaluated by the committee on the basis of character, leadership, scholarship,
and citizenship as required by the terms of the family trust. This is
done by rating the candidates on a point scale in 7 categories. Once
these ratings have been made, candidates are ranked according to the results.
At present, the specific categories being used by the committee are: 1) Laude
recognition program 2) ACT composite score, 3) writing sample results, 4)
leadership and involvement points, 5) department recognition points, 6)
interview results, and 7) application evaluation.
After each candidate
has been rated in the first four categories, these scores are totaled, and all
candidates are then ranked. Using these results, the committee selects the
candidates who advance to the final round. Candidates who reach the final round
are then interviewed by committee members and their applications are thoroughly
reviewed. The numerical results of these steps are then added to each
candidate's previously earned total to give each a final rank. Typically,
Candidates ranking the highest at the conclusion of this process are selected
as Nelson Scholarship recipients. All scholarship decisions made by the
Scholarship Committee relying on this process are final.
The awarding of
scholarships by the SHS Scholarship Committee is based not only on grades and
academic achievement, but also on leadership, involvement, character, and
citizenship. The Scholarship Selection Committee believes that it has the
responsibility to uphold these honored distinctions in making its
decisions. Therefore, any violation of the Student Code of Conduct
involving academic dishonesty, alcohol, and other drugs, criminal or civil law
which adversely reflects or degrades the dignity and character of these
scholarships will result in the scholarship being withdrawn. A scholarship
candidate and/or recipient must adhere to the responsibilities of good
character and citizenship. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to
revoke the scholarship of anyone convicted of a crime.
If such violations
occur during the student’s senior year (defined as after completion of the
student’s junior year), the candidate will be eliminated from the scholarship
selection process. In the case of the Nelson Scholarship, violations occurring
during the student’s freshman, sophomore or junior years will result in a
scoring deduction after the 7 scholarship categories are tallied. In addressing
the difference in penalty between seniors and underclassmen, the committee
believes there is a great deal of maturity and growth in character that can
occur during these years. By the time a student is a senior and is in serious
pursuit of scholarships for post high school education, he/she must make
serious choices involving character and citizenship.
Application
Procedures: Students wishing to
apply for a Nelson Scholarship will be expected to meet the following
requirements:
- Completion of all aspects of the Nelson
Scholarship application form.
- Completion of a written essay in a supervised
setting on a topic chosen by the scholarship committee.

Scholarship Funding
Guidelines Subject to
sufficient funding from the trust fund in any given year, scholarship grants
will be based on a numerical rank, determined for each candidate using the
scoring system found in the Selection Process and Criteria listed above.
Scholarship Renewal Factors which govern
continuation of the Nelson Scholarship are as follows:
- It is the hope of the donor that the scholarships
become sustaining; however, continuation of the scholarships shall depend
on the committee recommendations and the availability of funds.
- It is customary for postsecondary schools to
submit an academic achievement report to Superior High School. It is the
responsibility of the recipient to arrange with his/her postsecondary
school to have appropriate transcripts sent to the high school. The
evaluation of these reports by the Scholarship Committee in most cases
determines the continuation of individual scholarships.
- A student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average
(based on a 4.0 scale). Recipients failing to meet this standard are required
to provide a written explanation to the committee. If a student falls
below a 3.0, he/she is placed on probation. He/she is placed on probation
only once. Thereafter,
- if during any semester his/her grade point
average falls below a 3.0 and their cumulative grade point average remains
lower than a 3.0, he/she will automatically lose his/her scholarship.
Scholarship renewal will be granted or denied at the discretion of the
committee.
- It is the responsibility of the Scholarship
Committee to rule on any questions not specifically outlined in the
guidelines.
6.
At any time during your post high school education, should you
desire to withdraw from the institution you are attending, you may do so for up
to one year without loss of the scholarship, provided you have given the
Scholarship Committee timely notice of your intention.
