UWS AND ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TEAM TO EDUCATE ON HOLOCAUST
Students from UW-Superior and fifth grade students from Northern Lights Elementary have been cooperatively studying the holocaust inspired by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Students met together in early October in a book club format to discuss some of the living conditions, world perspectives, and horrifying events young Anne survived. They began formulating questions around the Holocaust and World War II. In November, students again joined forces to create projects of interest on the topic to be shared with the public. Read more…
SMS GEOGRAPHIC LITERACY NIGHT/GEOGRAPHY BEE
Superior Middle School’s 2nd Annual Geographic Literacy Night and Geography Bee was a great success. The night involved geography activities and a Geography Bee. UWS and UMD education students facilitated 5th-8th graders as they played games, made crafts and competed in challenging intellectual games.
Twenty-seven sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students competed to earn the opportunity to compete in the National Geographical Society’s National Geography Bee. It was a fierce competition; the championship round featured an eighth grade student from each wing. Congratulations to Samin Abddullah who won 1st Place. Caden Willie who earned 2nd Place, and Olivia Moen 3rd Place. Congratulations to all who participated in the team or building level!
HONORING A LOVED ONE THROUGH A CONTRIBUTION TO SMS
Tom and Cindy Ledin of Superior, recently completed their desire to honor a deceased relative, their late uncle, George Jackson of New Richmond, WI., by what they felt was a fitting donation of funds to the Superior Middle School music program. A set of tympani drums was purchased, with the last of the four drum set just recently received by the Superior Middle School. Not much history was known about George, other than he married later in life and worked at Honeywell Manufacturing. In fact, it wasn’t known until the reception at his funeral, of his talents and involvement in the music field. As a young man, it was revealed, that George played clarinet well enough to be in a band that entertained riverboat gamblers as it traveled the Mississippi River. He also played the saxophone, the flute, and was proficient on the guitar. In the latter years of his life, right up until the time he went to a care facility, George parlayed his talents to an advantage by giving guitar lessons to a neighbor in exchange for lawn care services.
Dan Gucinski, band teacher at SMS, who directed the purchase, noted the serious need for replacement of the previous set of tympani drums as they dated back to the days at East when it was then a high school. The Ledin family is sure that George would be pleased that he is to be remembered in some small way beyond his life in the music of the Superior Middle School.
May the beat go on…
FACILITIES ADEQUACY STUDY
On June 14, 2013, the Board of Education chose LHB, Inc. to conduct an adequacy study of all district facilities. Since that time, LHB has toured the facilities, gathered information and conducted meetings with staff members.
In early 2014, the firm has presented its findings to the Board. In January, energy consulting firm McKinstry presented an energy assessment study. The Board heard details on the physical condition of facilities in February, and on March 6, 2014, LHB presented the educational adequacy portion of its study.
LHB presented its recommendations, including costs, in a draft plan at the April 15 School Board meeting. The Board continues to meet to discuss the recommendations it has received from LHB.
